Topic: Using AI and Emerging Technologies to Improve Resiliency of Underground Assets
Presentation Summary: Military and municipal utilities face a common challenge, upholding target level of service for aging utility infrastructure needing near-term repair and rehabilitation. Artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies provide innovative tools for dataset development, predictive asset management, and QA/QC to mitigate the utility’s risk. Our presentation will introduce several AI and related technologies and use cases for military and municipal utilities. We will also share how one Texas utility, Sheppard Air Force Base, quickly evaluated storm drain asset condition, prioritized corrective actions, and prepared digital datasets for better Base resiliency in 2023. AutoCAD, historical records, survey, field condition assessment, GIS review, and engineering evaluation were leveraged to produce a high-quality, system-wide digital asset inventory during a 15-month period of performance. We will highlight innovations unique to the project and examples of high-impact deliverables.
